Oct 2, 2020 | by Irvandias Sanjaya

Habitat for Humanity is a global non-profit organization that focuses on housing issues. With a big dream to create a world where every human being has a proper shelter, they partners with other organizations (for-profit or non-profit) to build houses together. Habitat for Humanity is an international organization with many branches, one of which is in Indonesia.

This organisation was founded by a group of farmers and biblical scholars at Koinonia Farm, Georgia, USA to inspire the movement for racial reconciliation in 1942. Jordan and his colleague Fuller later developed the concept of “partnership housing”. It is aimed at those who need adequate housing and are willing to work side by side with volunteers to build simple and decent houses.

Where’s do they based?

Globally, Habitat for Humanity is located in 70 countries. In Indonesia, they spread across 4 cities—Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and Batam.

Why do they focus on issues related to housing?

The organization believes that ownership of decent and affordable housing can lead to positive lifestyle changes for people & communities—help people avoid instability, stress, fear & feel more independent & self-confident.

In Indonesia alone, based on the 2016 Central Statistics Agency report, there are approximately 7.9 million families who live in unfit habitation. In urban areas, many people live along railways and river banks, and on the streets. Knowing these conditions, Habitat for Humanity has a target to help more than 100 thousand families to get adequate housing by 2020.

What kind of programs do they run?

Habitat for Humanity Indonesia implemented several programs during the last few years, mainly focused on 6 big issues—housing, water & sanitation, disaster response, house financing access, education & health, and economic empowerment. One of their projects supports the government program “100-0-100″—to reduce slum settlements or uninhabitable houses in Indonesia.
