Community Development Organizations in Indonesia

Sustainable Development Goals laid down by the United Nations aim to achieve global development that is sustainable and “leaves no one behind”. For the world to flourish, there is an urgent need to eradicate inequality in all its form and ensure the development of all communities.
The term ‘community development’ loosely stands for the process through which a community is able to achieve development and raise the standard and quality of living of its members.
Access to education, clean drinking water, sanitation, social welfare services, healthcare services, development of small-scale industries, equal participation, are part of human rights and are essential for the development of communities.
Community development should result in social and economic upliftment and empowerment of the members, free from any inequality so that they can have all the basics enjoyed by the members of the developed communities of the world.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 ‘Sustainable cities and communities’ identify the need for a future in which “cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more”.
UN SDGs converge Indonesia’s ‘Nine Aspirations’ or national development goals called Nawa Cita laid down by the Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
Other UN SDGs also work toward ensuring the development and upliftment of disadvantaged, vulnerable communities and sections of the world. These include Sustainable Development Goals like – No Poverty (1), Zero Hunger (2), Good Health and Wellbeing (3), Quality Education (4), Gender Equality (5), Clean Water and Sanitation (6), Affordable and Clean Energy (7), Decent Work and Economic Growth (8), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (9), Reduced Inequalities (10), Peace and Justice and Strong Institutions (16).
In Indonesia, an example of a community development initiative is the World Bank-funded National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM Mandiri).
It is Indonesia’s national program “that is at the heart of the Government of Indonesia’s effort to reduce poverty. It was launched officially in 2007 and scaled up dramatically existing initiatives,” as stated by the World Bank.
The program focuses on reducing poverty across all Indonesian provinces through a community planning process. It aims to generate employment, invests in small-scale infrastructure projects to fast-track the development of villages and urban wards in Indonesia.
PNPM Mandiri is active in over 6,000 sub-districts and nearly 70,000 communities across 33 provinces in Indonesia with an aim to “improve the economic and social welfare of the poor and expand their employment opportunities through community consultation, empowerment, and capacity building at the local level,” reads World Bank page on community-driven development in Indonesia.
